Good Afternoon,

I hope that this note finds you doing well and enjoying this mild January weather. I’m writing today with a few important items about transitioning from first to second semester and beginning to think about the 2023-2024 academic year.

At 4 PM today, (Friday, 1/27), your student’s grades became available to you via your parent login on MyD-E. The students were able to see their grades, and discuss them with their advisor yesterday during Advisory. If anything about a grade is unclear, please encourage your student to connect with their teacher directly to better understand their first semester grade. For instructions on accessing your student’s grades please see below.

On Wednesday, I spoke with the 9th, 10th, and 11th graders about grade-level course Interest Forms that we’re using this year
to ensure that students have an opportunity to express a desire to be considered for placement into Honors and AP level courses for next year (2023-’24). The “interest form” is a google form that all students in each of those grades must complete. The form was made available to students on Thursday morning and will be closed on Monday, 1/30 at 8 AM. It is critical that the completion of this form be done by individual students as it’s designed to help them reflect on those disciplines that are of great interest to them.

Below is the framing that we provided to students and believe is important for their caregivers to understand as well:

The purpose of this form is to give rising 10th/11th/12th grade students the opportunity to express their desire to be considered for placement in Honors and AP level classes that they would like to take next year. This form is NOT a means of signing up for these classes or a guarantee that you’ll be placed in any of these classes. All students must complete this form to ensure that each student is given the opportunity to demonstrate interest in advanced courses.
Please remember, each student’s academic path is unique and highly individual. Our goal is for you to pursue an academic schedule that meets your interests and challenges you but also gives you time and energy to pursue interests outside of the classroom, stay healthy, and enjoy your time at D-E.
This form will remain open and editable until 8 am on Monday, 1/30. Please take your time when completing this as this form as it is an integral part of our placement process. Also, please note that all members of each class are required to complete this form. Narrative responses should be 5-10 sentences.
**If you would like to be considered for an honors or AP level course in any department, be sure to review and consider The Honors Criteria**
On the topic of scheduling, please be sure that you have your calendars marked for Curriculum Night on Monday, 2/13. The evening will begin at 7 PM with an All-Family meeting in Hajjar Auditorium. From there, caretakers will go to grade-level meetings with their student’s Dean to learn about the specifics of scheduling. Please note that this event will not be available via zoom. Deans will send their slides presentations  later that week and then be available for a drop-in Zoom meeting on Friday, 2/17.
