Dear 10th Grade Parents and Caregivers:
The new year and the spring semester are both in full swing here on campus. The add/drop period is coming to an end, with the deadline to add new courses arriving tomorrow, 1/30, and the deadline to drop a course following quickly on Friday, 2/2. Please encourage your child to speak with me as soon as possible if they have any lingering questions about their spring schedule.
I hope that many of you will join us in person on Thursday, 2/15 at 7pm in Hajjar Auditorium when the College Counseling Office hosts the directors of undergraduate admissions from Trinity College in Connecticut and Syracuse University in New York. The goal of this informal discussion is to provide you and your 10th graders (who are also welcome to attend) with a broad understanding of the college admissions landscape as well as some wisdom about approaching the application process with intentionality and understanding. For more information, please see Eileen Feikens’s email of 1/12, or reach out to the College Counseling Office.
Eileen and I are also looking forward to pairing the students’ advisor groups with their college counselors early next month. Our purpose in making this match now is to allow our excellent counselors the opportunity to get to know each student holistically – as a member of the D-E community – before beginning their work with them as applicants. While most of their interactions this year will be about relationship building, your students will have the opportunity to meet individually with their assigned counselor during the course selection process later this spring.
Before we get rolling on any of that, though, your kids may be thinking about how to approach their first Projects and Assessments Week (PAW) this March 4th-8th. All students now have access to a spreadsheet where they can learn more about what they are doing in each class (workshop, project, field trip, exam, etc.). We are asking advisors to help them map out their PAW schedule and think about how best to approach their preparation. It’s exciting to see the variety of experiences our students will engage with their teachers and peers before heading off to Spring Break, which really is just around the corner!
Sincerely,
Emily
