11/08/22 From Shai Zacaraev, Introducing New Gradewide Discussions

Published: 11/08/2022

Dear Senior Families,

What an exciting time to be a senior at D-E! We have just crossed the first official college deadline, and I am hopeful that even with more applications to possibly be submitted most of the heavy labor of content creation has been completed. This first quarter our seniors have navigated in person school like old pros, won the spirit week competition, and completed all of their work for the first quarter.

This week the senior class has also begun to engage in a gradewide discussion on Difficult Conversations. This will be a 3 part series that we will insert throughout the school year and has the aim of giving them the tools they need to engage with the world outside the schoolhouse gate in a structured manner. The material is based on the work by Douglas Stone, Bruce Patton, Sheila Heen, and it is focused around a central idea on how to discuss what matters most. Our first session included a review of several gradewide activities we engaged in throughout high school and then we began to delve into the first part which focuses on the What Happened conversation. I encourage you to ask your senior about the session as I am certain it will provide some interesting conversations at home.

Sincerely,

Shai Zacaraev, Ed.D.
