12/15 From CCO: An Update for Senior (Class of 2023) Families

Dear Class of 2023 (Senior) Parents/Guardians,

As we head into Winter Break, I am writing to provide you with some context and perspective on where your child is in the college process.

Please know that we have doubled our availability during Counselor on Duty since our return from Thanksgiving break. Each day two of the college counselors have welcomed students with questions on a first come first served basis. This is in addition to the individual appointments we have had with each of our individual counseling teams.

We have continued to send weekly reminders to all seniors and I include the most recent points below for your reference. As a reminder, the CCO will be closed throughout Winter Break. While the counselors will be checking email, they will not be able to conduct individual meetings to review essays. We have been encouraging all seniors to schedule meetings to do this prior to leaving for break.

Here are some reminders that we have sent them:
  • Students are required to share decisions that they receive directly with their counselor,  even during Winter Break. This applies to all decisions, whether they are admit, defer, deny, scholarship, January admit, guaranteed transfer, etc. We ask that students DO NOT enter these decisions into Scoir, as their counselor will do this for them.
  • If a student is considering applying Early Decision II, please understand that colleges have different timelines for this process. It is the STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to determine EDI or EA schools’ release timelines and how that might impact ongoing plans.
  • Students are encouraged to continue checking their application portals 2-3 times per week. If they receive an email from a college regarding a missing document, they should respond to the college and send a follow up email to their counselor for assistance. Please note that it may take colleges up to 14 days to process application materials once they are submitted.
  • Students will need to submit standardized testing for EDII/RD applications (if applicable). If they plan to submit standardized testing to EDII/RD schools, review each school’s requirements as soon as possible as it can take several weeks for schools to receive and process testing from College Board or ACT. Students should be sure to plan ahead for January deadlines.
  • If your child receives an offer of admission under a binding Early Decision plan, they are required to withdraw their other applications as soon as possible! They have been instructed to do so either by email or through individual schools portals. They must copy their counselor on such actions to ensure that they have followed proper procedures.
Many students have already received numerous decision notifications and we expect many other schools to release decisions over the next few weeks. Please know that we are committed to supporting each student through the conclusion of their college process. If you have critical concerns that require immediate attention, please contact me, Eileen Cunningham Feikens, at feikee@d-e.org as I will be available over the Winter Break to troubleshoot any issues that may arise.

On behalf of the College Counseling Team, I wish you and your family a wonderful Winter Break filled with peace, joy, and good health.

With warmest regards,
Eileen Cunningham Feikens
