From Emily Sclafani, Dean for the Class of 2026

For the 9th graders, this past week has been all about wayfinding. As the newest members of our Upper School community, they are working constantly to orient themselves in an unfamiliar physical and social environment. And this isn’t just about finding the quickest route from art class to gym; it’s also about picking up on subtle social cues, learning the unwritten “rules” of high school life, experimenting with new modes of self-expression, and ultimately (I promise) finding their way to the folks who are going to be “their people” for the next four years. It’s natural for kids to find this whole process a little bewildering and incredibly exhausting, even if they’re having a great time of it. For our part, we’re working to ease the transition by setting up a lunch space hosted by the 11th and 12th grade Peer Mentors, planning a grade-bonding trip to Camp Mason on October 6th-7th, and getting everyone pumped for the Activities Fair on September 21st. And, of course, my office door is always open to anyone looking for a friendly face.
